Open kitchen and living area with a wood-and-grey kitchen island and base cabinets, Jade Hills, Kajang, by The M Renovation

A custom kitchen island from The M Renovation is a run of plywood base cabinets finished in laminate on all visible sides, priced from RM450 per foot of length with a basic laminate top, plus the finished back and a quartz top if you want one. Delivery and installation are included across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

An island is the one piece of a kitchen that is seen from every side, so it is built differently from a wall run: both faces are finished, the ends are finished, and the top usually carries the sink or the hob, which means services in the floor before the cabinets arrive.

Island or peninsula?

  • Freestanding island. Needs about 900 mm of walkway on every side. Suits open-plan kitchens from roughly 12 feet wide.
  • Peninsula. Attached to a wall or the main run at one end, so it needs clearance on three sides only. The answer for most condo kitchens. The cream curved peninsula at Alix Residences is this type.
  • Breakfast bar island. A raised or overhanging top on one side for stools, storage on the other.
  • Working island. Sink or hob in the top, with the services run under the floor. Plan this before tiling.

How much does a kitchen island cost in Malaysia?

An island is priced as base cabinets plus the parts a wall run does not have. Delivery and installation are included in every rate.

PartRate (from)
Base cabinets, including a basic laminate topRM450 per foot of length
Finished back panel, laminate on plywoodRM80 per square foot
Quartz top instead of laminateadd RM250 per foot
Second row of cabinets on the back instead of a panelRM450 per foot

A 6-foot island with cabinets on one side, a finished back and a quartz top is about RM2,700 for the cabinets, RM1,440 for the back panel and RM1,500 for the quartz, so around RM5,600. Cabinets on both sides, waterfall ends in quartz, or a sink cut-out take it higher. Most islands we build land between RM3,500 and RM8,000.

The site visit with a detailed written quotation is RM500, deducted from the contract when you go ahead.

Before we build: the floor and the services

A working island needs water, waste and power under the floor exactly where the cabinets will sit, and that has to happen before tiling. If you are renovating the kitchen with us we sequence it; if the floor is already done, a breakfast-bar island with power only is the realistic option. We check this at the site measurement and tell you which you are looking at.

Questions we get asked

How much space do I need for an island?

About 900 mm of clear floor on each working side. Under that, a peninsula is the better answer.

Can the island have a sink or hob?

Yes, if water, waste and power can be run under the floor before tiling. Otherwise power only.

Quartz or laminate top?

Quartz for a working island, because it takes heat and knives. Laminate is fine for a breakfast bar.

Can it match my existing cabinets?

Yes, if the laminate is still available. Bring a door or the code.

How long does it take?

Three to five weeks after the site measurement. Installation time depends on the size of the island and is confirmed in your quotation. A quartz top also needs templating and fitting.
